Living in London – Not Notting Hill

Portobello Road, Notting Hill

Living in London – Not Notting Hill-Image via Wikipedia

London has had an influx of American nationals being shipped over for professional reasons, this accounts for the large population of Americans moving to London. As a result there are some areas in an around London that are overrun by US expatriates i.e. South Kensington, Notting Hill and Chelsea, all offer London rentals, London flats, and London apartments. There are other neighbourhoods in London that have been overlooked and have proved to be low-cost and above-board. These would include Marble Arch with housing prices estimated to be 25 percent less than those in other commonly situated expatriate populations, the same of which can be true for London rentals in those areas. Edgeware Road is located in Marble Arch and two blocks south of that road is an assortment of flower shops, wine merchants and cafes. It might be considered by some to be a boisterous main road but it essentially gives the area a unique buzz which is further complemented by an abundance of remarkable Middle Eastern restaurants to what might otherwise be an average charming neighbourhood.

In central London, West of Marble Arch is another residential London rental neighbourhood known as Bayswater.  Bayswater boasts enchanting surroundings with its collection of awe-inspiring picturesque squares which are almost completely unchanged from the time of their original construction. It is located in an ideal spot where you are able to explore the most famous London market, Portobello Road as well as areas offering shopping, restaurants and colourful Victorian architecture i.e. Westbourne Grove Road and Notting Hill. Bayswater also features several appealing white-faced Victoria townhouses which serve as B & Bs and hotels intermixed with London flats. Notwithstanding its villagey pockets, Bayswater may not be the upmarket Notting Hill but it will acquaint you with Britain’s loveable distinctive features where the bona fide Londoners live, eat and drink.

Now that you have decided you are moving to London get ready to be part of the cultural exchanges and connections, as there are a number of interesting places to visit and things to do, all within easy striking distance of central London and not all of them overrun by tourists. So let your adventurous new life moving to London begin!

“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.” —Samuel Johnson, 1777.

London Relocation’s First Client Social a Success!

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Author:  Colleen

There was a time when I used to field London Relocation‘s prospect enquiries and book appointments for its clients moving to London. Now that I focus on the blog and London Living, my interactions are more so relegated to cyberspace, so I myself don’t often get to meet in person the lovely people who entrust our relocation agency to help them rent a London apartment.

It was therefore a special delight last night to have the opportunity to meet at least thirty of London Relocation‘s recent clients at our very first social! And what nicer way for those who have just made their London move to establish a new network of friends and contacts among other expats?

The event was held at Westbourne House, right on Westbourne Grove near London Relocation’s new office. Self-described as “a sophisticated mix of Parisian boutique and Manhattan loft,” the venue was suitably classy for our wonderful clientele. Honestly, it was a fantastic and really, really fun mix of people (a lot of Americans and Canadians) who have all found their way to London for various reasons and embody the right enthusiasm for their new adventure. Singles, couples, families…everyone’s needs are different, but London Relocation is the common denominator that has met those needs across the board.

Among the topics of conversation I engaged in last evening were moving to London as an accompanying spouse, becoming educated on the parameters of certain budgets for certain London locations, lifestyle considerations such as endless options for travel outside and exploring within London, commuting, going with private health insurance versus NHS, dog-friendliness of London flats/neighborhoods, etc., and how making local connections (with expats and otherwise) is so important to having all your inevitable questions answered, be it during the relocation process or just afterward when you’re  trying to figure out the everyday things like where you can get your computer fixed! And I was most ecstatic to learn that clients have found London Relocation’s own resources to be invaluable to their process, be it the friendly staff that takes your call or right here on the blog and our London Living social network (through which many London expats have made good friends!).

So today I’d like to send a cyber-standing ovation to my colleague Ja’Nae’ Mosley for organizing such a superb outing, and to our boss-man Anthony Gallo for providing for the food and booze. :) Looking forward to our subsequent socials and hope to see you all there, too, once you move to London!

Americans Moving to London – Finding the U.S. in the UK (Part 1 of 3)

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

(This excerpt previously appeared in my 17 May guest post on Anglotopia.net, a brilliant, comprehensive resource on all things UK that I highly recommend to all Anglophiles!)

As an American-owned and operated agency, we field a lot of enquiries from North Americans looking to make the big transatlantic move to the United Kingdom.  A big part of the job is managing expectations, as, for as much as expatriates are seeking change in a new culture, it’s only that natural that they also seek a degree of familiarity with what they already know.  We can’t perform architectural miracles that increase the square-footage and closet space of these predominantly Victorian-era buildings to meet modern American proportions; nonetheless, we can advise on which neighborhoods have a solid American demographic by virtue of other appealing factors.  Generally, American expats dig London’s West side, so we’ll start this series with the neighborhood where our friendly lil’ office is located:

Notting Hill

No joking, this neighborhood continues to be a draw for Americans because of the Hugh Grant film of same name.  There is a comfort to coming to Notting Hill from abroad thanks to a ready familiarity with the charms of Portobello Road as it’s portrayed in the movie.  Bedecked in antique shops, fashion boutiques, pubs, cafes, and street stalls overflowing with produce, this colorful strip contains all the quaint appeal that Americans expect from London.

The amenities don’t stop at Portobello, however; indeed, the entire area is dotted with day and night-life amidst quiet residential streets that provide a nice escape from the city-center bustle and is close to green space like Kensington Gardens.  The neighborhood’s Westbourne Grove has been nicknamed “Rodeo Drive” by residents for its posh clothing shops, and, overall, residences are well-maintained to an American standard.

London Relocation Loves Arts Mentoring–Join in the Launch!

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Today we at London Relocation Ltd. are proud to spread the word on a new philanthropic organization, Arts Mentoring!  Founded by three local Notting Hill residents (including our dear friend and guest blogger, Sue Hillman, of It’s Your London tours), Arts Mentoring aims to bring the joy of art into the lives of orphan children, offering them sustenance for the soul.  As they say on their website:

“By ‘arts’ we mean everyone involved in artistic expression from singers, to actors, to painters, photographers, musicians but not limited to these at all!

At Arts Mentoring we know we have had the luxury of personal experience in the arts and  have always been keen supporters but we know that these experiences are not typical for millions of children around the world and in the UK and it was time to help change this.  Children whose lives are hard can find joy through the arts as they see another side to life, have a chance to express themselves and learn skills that may change their lives.”

As this new charity broadens its support base, they’re looking to officially kick things off at their Launch Party on Saturday, 5 June.  The event will take place from 7:00pm to 11:00pm at the gorgeous Notting Hill venue, 20th Century Theatre on Westbourne Grove (just a few doors West of Portobello Road).  It promises to be a jubilent evening of cocktails and canapes as well as live performances that include the jazzy vocals of  Rebecca Poole, pop/rock dazzlings of Tiger Lilly, and humorous shinanigans of ventriloquist Nina Conti & Monk.  Do book your tickets and support a most meaningful cause that will inspire the children of the world!

Lunchtime with London Relocation Ltd.

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

This afternoon, I’d just like to give a little shout-out to Mota’s Bakery, located at 8 Ferdinand St. in Primrose Hill, London.  Mota’s specialty is organic deli foods such as sandwiches, salads, and cakes, and they have hot meal offerings as well for takeaway or delivery.  I have a particularly soft spot for this place thanks to Jeremy, our Sandwich Man who delivers unto us a basket full of sandwich varieties every day, right here in our office.  Jeremy is an absolute pleasure–he always remembers to bring my favorites, and his baguette sandwiches are only £2.50, about half the price I’d been paying in the neighbourhood at the posh delis on Westbourne Grove and off Portobello Road.  My usuals are ham and emmental, cheddar and tomato, and the much-coveted brie and green grapes (all of which are offered on white or brown bread); yeah, I go pretty simple, but there are amazing spicy chicken sandwiches to be had that my colleagues have enjoyed.  I’m realizing I could go on to elaborate and embellish to my heart’s content, but I think the simplicity in Mota’s organics foods and its service ought to speak for itself.

From us here at London Relocation Ltd., tuck in!

Dining with London Relocation Ltd.–Decent Mexican Food, Por Favor??

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Taqueria on Westbourne Grove

As an American living in London, one of the most difficult adjustments of an already tough transition was accepting the fact that if I ever wanted to eat remotely passable Mexican food again, I would have to either book my next flight home or, more economically, run out to Somerfield and buy an Old El Paso taco kit to experiment with at home.  I have yet to find that Elusive Enchilada oozing with spicy yet sweet mole sauce in the UK, suffering instead through well-intentioned, yet poor attempts.  It’s like all the right components are there, but it’s just the wrong stuff:  the wrong kind of cheese, the wrong kind of beans (use refried, not kidney!!!), the wrong kinds of toppings (I recently ate pub nachos topped in “salsa” that was really tomato sauce belonging on pasta).  In Ireland, there were actually alfafa sprouts.  Blasphemy!

The light at the end of the churro?  Well, I don’t see enchiladas on the menu per se (get those at Crazy Homies–amazing!), but the hands-down most authentic Mexican (and I mean Mexican-Mexican, not American-Mexican) cuisine that I’ve tasted in London is at Taqueria, on Westbourne Grove in Notting Hill.  The soft-shell tacos are served tapas style so that you can order up a plethora of choices to share with the table.  I miss the shallow bowl of a standard margherita glass, but sipping this nectar of the Aztec gods from a martini one suffices just fine.  My latest beverage discovery was the Michelada de Guadalajara, which is basically the cerveza version of a Bloody Mary.

Located just down the street from London Relocation Ltd.‘s Notting Hill office, the restaurant is a local treasure for which we’re muchas grateful.  Adios alfalfa enchiladas, hola Taqueria!

De-de-de-DE de-de-de-DE, de-DE DE-de-DE-de-DE-de…de-de [insert screech of needle scratching vinyl record album here]–STOP!!!!  DON’T GET IT STUCK IN MY HEAD!!!!  I’m not talking about the Suzanne Vega song, “Tom’s Diner,” for cripe’s sakes…I’m talkin’ TOM’S DELI!!!  It’s a most fabulous daily sandwich stop for me.  Yes, primarily because I’m lazy and don’t often walk much further than across the street from the office, but also because their sandwich variety is top-notch, and if you did want to dine-in, they offer cosy seating in a nostalgic atmosphere of vintage decor and retro packaged treats.  As I wait for my afternoon cappuccino to brew, I delight in the selection of pre-packaged sandwiches constructed from fresh and healthy ingredients (well, mostly healthy…there’s a chorizo and cheese baguette I’ve been eyeing for a while…) or the cakes–oh, the cakes!–propped so sweetly in both the figurative and literal sense on their lil’ cake stands (one of my goals in life is to own one of those stands, with a newly baked, spongy cake frosted as a candy-coated marvel being the focal point of my kitchen each day).  Even though my dash-in and dash-out habits typically render my daily stay at Tom’s no more than 5 minutes, it’s a charming bit-o-my day that gives me that warm fuzzy feeling of coming home.  Better yet, the owner, Tom Conran, likewise runs the fine establishments of Crazy Homies and Lucky 7, two nearby venues (click here for our previous blog post on the former).

Speaking of HOME [insert shameless plug here]…let London Relocation Ltd. find you one close to good ol’ friends like Tom’s restaurants!
