Living in London – Rock on!

Just try to fathom it: 4,000 years!!!

Just try to fathom it: 4,000 years!!!

When you move to London, the guests will follow, to be sure.  My present visitors to this fine city of London have inspired today’s post, as when I left for work this morning, they themselves were about to depart for their day-long bus tour of Stonehenge and Bath.  Wanting to see the former attraction, I had recommended they bundle it with something else (as most bus tours do in an array of combinations) to make the venture out into the country truly worthwhile.  Now before anyone gets worked up that I may have just implied Stonehenge would not, on its own, be “worthwhile,” that is not my personal opinion; however, I have known enough people who have shrugged it off as just so, rendering it one of those experiences that truly differs for everyone.  “To each his own” and “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” as they say time and again.

At any rate, no one can avoid being awed by the history of Stonehenge that is communicated so efficiently via the audioguides you are given upon entry (admission is often included in the price of your tour–check to be sure).  Okay, no, you can’t touch the stones, and for much of your circuit round the boulders you are viewing from a bit of a distance, but it’s all in the name of preservation.  In total, this visit takes less than an hour.

You can't bathe here, but try just up the street at the new thermal spa.

As for Bath, this well-preserved bounty of Georgian architecture and Roman history makes for an enchanting daytrip.  The Roman Baths (also usually included in your tour) and Abbey are the primary attractions; otherwise, just stroll along the river, browse the shops on Pulteney Bridge, or make an atmospheric climb to the Circus and Royal Crescent to feed your eyes (and to feed your belly, on a little side street just near the Crescent is delightful strudel bar, Hansel Und Gretel…PERFECT on those cooler, drizzly days to warm you in body and soul).  Do as the British aristocracy once did and “take the waters” to cure what ails you in the Pump Room that adjoins the Roman Baths, getting the resultant terrible gritty taste out of your mouth with tea and scones in this opulent setting.

And then?  Just sit back and relax to the dynamic green landscape that whirs by outside the bus windows as you return to London.

This doesn’t just have to be a recommendation for guests.  When you relocate to London (hopefully with the aid of London Relocation Ltd.), take advantage of all the convenient day tours available–they make for ideal weekend getaways.

London Relocation’s Quest for a Decent Taco: Part Uno

Tonight I crave something South-of-Border

With the vast variety of cuisines to be found in London, sometimes you just still crave what home had to offer.

A common North American ex-pat gripe in London is the utter deficiency in decent Mexican food.  All the basic components might be there–the cheese, the beans, the sauce, etc.–but there is always something a little off in the TYPE of the aforementioned ingredients that is included–what you might use in lasagna is not necessarily going to achieve success in an enchilada.  A much-lauded venue for its authentic cuisine is Notting Hill’s Taqueria on Westbourne Grove, which I will vouch for–the tacos are served tapas-style so that you can mix and match a variety of choices to share with your table.  So, I am satisfied to an extent, but still…where’s my enchilada?!  The good news is that Old El Paso is marketed in London, so you can still buy all the fixin’s to prepare your own home-cooked deliciousness just when one would think a taco shell and refried beans would be scarce in these here parts.  But tonight, I am far too lazy for this, so I am taking an American friend’s recommendation from long ago to check out Crazy Homies on Westbourne Park Road (be wary of all those London streets in close proximity with nearly identical names, by the way)…from what I hear, it’s a bit of a dive (which is not necessarily a bad thing…the best king crab legs to be found in Chicago are in a subterranean armpit of a restaurant) and the food may leave something to be desired, but the margaritas are allegedly fabulous.  God willing, I’m going to try them out tonight.  Will keep you posted.

Move to London for the Ultimate English Garden

The Palm House at Kew Gardens

The Palm House at Kew Gardens

If you’re in Central London, just a matter of a 20 or so minutes on the District Line will whisk you away to Kew Gardens, away from the brick and bustle of the city and into the flora and fauna of nature.  Spanning 300 acres, Kew Gardens is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year!  As an American who was rarely exposed to anything even that old back home, this horticultural achievement is impressive.  kew1Once housing royalty, the gardens continue to cultivate and preserve exotic plants from all over the world, including the world’s largest indoor plant, a Chilean wine palm.  Walk within the charming Victorian greenhouses, around the extensive outdoor grounds (there is a tram if not up to it on foot), and even up among the treetops along the Treetop Walkway as a calming means of stepping into English history.  If you’re moving to London (hopefully with the help of London Relocation Services), make Kew Gardens one of your first stops to unwind after all that unpacking!
