Living in London – Finding Heaven in Hell

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Author: Colleen

We'll see you in Hell!

We'll see you in Hell! Cheers!

No, I’m not turning this blog into a forum of theological debate.  I’m actually operating at quite a lower level, the lowest rung, in fact, of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Need to focus yet again on…*drumroll*…FOOD.  People who relocate to another country are perhaps the most open-minded of their species to cultural differences, rendering them willing volunteers to assimilate to their new environment.  This is true for North Americans in London as well, but, when it comes down to it, now and then you need that fix, that lil’ somethin’ familiar of home.  I have clearly expounded enough on my quest for Mexican food and am now moving on to that ever-craved creation that is oh-so versatile as a warm dinner or a cold leftover breakfast right out of its foil from the fridge.  I speak, of course, of PIZZA.

The abundance of Italian restaurants in the city yields an ever-creative assortment of crisp, thin-crusted pizzas with unconventional (to an American, at least) toppings of egg, proscuitto, corn, eggplant, etc.  I’ve consumed infinite quantities of such by now…SO good.  Yet the fact remains that sometimes this Chicago gal wants a somewhat thicker, doughier crust.  Chicago-style itself is not to be found, though you can still go the Dominoes or Papa John’s delivery route, but my delivery or eat-in pizza of choice these days comes from the bowels of HELL.  Founded in New Zealand and only to be found so far in the Commonwealth (those lucky Canadians are getting it soon), Hell Pizza is an experience on so many levels–the website alone is, pardon my lingo, a hell of a lot of fun if you have the patience to wait for it to load (click on the little white devils running around the bottom of the screen to lift them up and throw ‘em around).  While you can customise your own pie to your liking, the pre-designed offerings (named after the 7 Deadly Sins and other evil terminology) offer a most random combination of flavours that work sinfully well with one another (Grimm, for example, which offers chicken, cream cheese, pine nuts, spring onions, apricot sauce, and rosemary, is a delightful surprise).  The crust is more typical of American-style pizza while still offering a unique, edgy twist via the toppings.  The most naughty feature yet:  dine in at either of their Fulham or Shepherd’s Bush atmospheric, blackened and flaming red locations on Tuesday night, and it’s all you can eat for £6 per person from 18:00-21:00!  Walk in, pay your fee, get your tin plate, and the pizza will come to you via a 3-tiered tray of options that the staff carries around to you in continuous rounds.  Wicked bliss.

While London Relocation Ltd.‘s aim is to spare you the hell that can accompany an international move, once you’re settled in, we’re only too eager to encourage you to dine out or order in from this Hell on Earth.

Living in London – Fashion Free-For-All

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Author: Colleen

Stroll off the runway to walk the streets the real ladies walk.

Let the sidewalks and Tube station platforms be your runway!

To preserve Anthony’s machismo, let me preface this post by saying that, yes, I am recurring female contributor to his blog.  Now let’s begin:

The erratic weather conditions we’ve had this week (where it’s literally turned from crisp, sunny blue skies to torrential downpour within minutes, only to return to the sun again–refer to our previous post on London weather) have inspired me to write a bit on London fashion.  Now, I’m not going to get into what couture walked the runways during Fashion Week or what designers are hot or not.  Rather, I just want to give a little heads-up to those of you relocating to London that may be concerned that your existing wardrobe won’t hack it in chic London.  I have also had countless visitors this year send me panic-stricken emails asking, “What should I pack??!!” so the same rules can apply to your future guests (because, oh yes, they will come…be ready to be the Host With The Most).

With the limited storage space available in most flats (don’t expect to see any walk-in closets, girls…you’ll be lucky if a furnished apartment comes with a freestanding or built-in warddrobe, or has the room for that extra furniture to begin with!), you may not even be inclined to add anything more…and the good news is, you don’t necessarily have to in order keep up with the trends!

Guys, you’ll be fine.  Maybe just don’t wear your thick university sweatshirts, football jerseys (as in the Packers, not Chelsea), or gleaming white New Balance trainers…as hardcore as the locals are for soccer, rugby, and cricket, athletic apparel doesn’t have strong presence in mainstream everyday-wear like it does in the States.

Gals, you may need to invest in a few staple items if you don’t already have them:  black leggings, opaque tights, skinny jeans, high boots, ballerina flats, and scarves.  With these basics in hand, the mix-and-match possibilities with everything you already have are endless.  And while many complain that there isn’t a “real” summer here with the temps rarely rising into the 80s and some days still rather chilly and rainy, it doesn’t mean your frilly, light summer things don’t have a place here.  The key is LAYERING.  The other day, for instance, I saw a thin, yellow cotton sundress and flip-flops braced for the weather with black leggings and a leather bomber jacket.  Dainty dresses that would typically be worn bare-legged with sandals or open-toed heels may instead be paired with jeans or tights and clunky boots.  The point is, fashion is all over the place here…winter tweeds are still floating around out there along with the thinnest of cotton and silks, so you’ll never really have to pack away your fall/winter garb.  In addition to contrasting textures, there is also a big hodge-podge of color and pattern combinations.  Pretty much anything goes as long as you have some taste for flattering lines and accessorizing as well the confidence to pull it off.

If you do have the itch to shop, London Relocation Ltd. can ensure you live by all the great stores.  Have at it!

London Relocation’s Quest for a Decent Taco: Part Uno

Friday, July 24th, 2009

 Author: Colleen

Tonight I crave something South-of-Border

With the vast variety of cuisines to be found in London, sometimes you just still crave what home had to offer.

A common North American ex-pat gripe in London is the utter deficiency in decent Mexican food.  All the basic components might be there–the cheese, the beans, the sauce, etc.–but there is always something a little off in the TYPE of the aforementioned ingredients that is included–what you might use in lasagna is not necessarily going to achieve success in an enchilada.  A much-lauded venue for its authentic cuisine is Notting Hill’s Taqueria on Westbourne Grove, which I will vouch for–the tacos are served tapas-style so that you can mix and match a variety of choices to share with your table.  So, I am satisfied to an extent, but still…where’s my enchilada?!  The good news is that Old El Paso is marketed in London, so you can still buy all the fixin’s to prepare your own home-cooked deliciousness just when one would think a taco shell and refried beans would be scarce in these here parts.  But tonight, I am far too lazy for this, so I am taking an American friend’s recommendation from long ago to check out Crazy Homies on Westbourne Park Road (be wary of all those London streets in close proximity with nearly identical names, by the way)…from what I hear, it’s a bit of a dive (which is not necessarily a bad thing…the best king crab legs to be found in Chicago are in a subterranean armpit of a restaurant) and the food may leave something to be desired, but the margaritas are allegedly fabulous.  God willing, I’m going to try them out tonight.  Will keep you posted.

London Fog

London's reputation for weather has been historically rotten, but I say it's lovely.

London's reputation for weather has been historically rotten, but I say it's lovely.

I emerged from my flat this morning to an overcast yet pleasant morning and walked to the Tube station.  When I then emerged from my destination station, I looked up into rain drops spitting in my eyes.  Over the course of my 5-minute walk to the office, the rain grew heavier then lighter then disappeared altogether.  When I looked out the window a half-hour later, there was sun.  Now, clouds.  No wait…sun.

So here’s the deal.  If you’re not originally from London and looking to move here, you’ve surely heard of its notorious weather.  Fear not.  I have lived here long enough to realise that the bad rap London weather gets is not entirely justified.  Given my above experience within the span of less than an hour, I see where the complaints come from, but still do not find them warranted.  The spring we just enjoyed was gorgeous, with more consecutive days of sunshine than I have ever experienced in the States.  I’m a Chicago native–don’t even challenge me that the weather is worse anywhere else on the globe.  Really.  I come from a land where temperature can shift 40 degrees Fahrenheit over just two days, from 50s and blustery to 90s and humid.  It constantly wreaked havoc on my sinuses, to the point I thought my face would implode.  In London, however, the climate is temperate, consistent, so even if it may get cooler a little earlier in the fall than back home, it’ll never plummet to the freezing depths of sub-zero temps in the winter; rather, at Christmas time, you can still enjoy a splendid day strolling around outside doing your window-shopping.  Sure, it may rain a lot in the fall, but you won’t be trudging through snow and slush come February (okay, with the exception of that fluke snowstorm this year.  Every kid deserves a snow day at some point in their lives, after all).  And when it does rain, it is not typically of the all-day downpour variety–instead, a lighter, often misting shower for a few minutes before the clouds part and there is sun once again.  And so the cycle may continue…lather, rinse, repeat.

The locals are pros, so just follow their lead.  Many just tough it out without head-cover, others produce umbrellas seemingly out of nowhere (mini, portable ones are sold just about everywhere).  Just figure that it’s all good for the skin, an effortless moisturising regimen.  And besides, London Relocation Services will be helping put a roof over your head, so you’ll be dry at home in no time :)
