Moving to London with children? Will they be able to make it in the big city? That could be the first question that crosses the minds of concerned parents when they know that they are going to be living in London with a young family. Yes. London is a busy cosmopolitan city, but somehow, in a way that is uniquely English, London also has a distinctly suburban and village feel at times. A lot of that has to do with the way that London has been divided into suburbs and boroughs. There are areas in the middle of London where you can be forgiven for thinking you are living in a small village in the heart of the English countryside.

Once you have settled into your new London rental, and have found schools for your children, you’ll want to give them the opportunity to see London and experience everything that London has to offer. It’s not just about monuments and museums. There are a number of activities that you can do as a family that will allow you to see London and spend a great day out as a family. London Zoo is a great place to start, if you’re looking for a full day of entertainment in the animal kingdom. The London Aquarium is also another exciting attraction that has been designed and developed to cater to children of all ages. Madame Tussauds, the Science Museum; these are all fascinating and thrilling attractions that will keep the entire family amused for hours.

But what happens when you are living in London and you’ve done all of the major tourist activities? What if you’re just looking for a spot to have a family picnic, relax in the summer sun, and spend some time enjoying the outdoors? Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens is a huge adventure zone for children of all ages. Free, easy to find and an experience that your kids will want to repeat every week. Kensington gardens in particular are the site of the Princess Diana Memorial Playground, complete with pirate ship and a natural beach. For the older children there are well built bicycle paths and skateboard areas. Swimming, boating, sports facilities; all free and on your doorstep.

Living in London with a young family can be one of the most enriching and exciting times in the history of your family. It will expose your children to an international style of living as well as opening their eyes to a world of possibility.

As a Londoner for you to get your money’s worth when enjoying the sights in London you have to visit the tourist attractions. Living in London does not mean that you should not act like a tourist! You have a magnificent city laid out before you are you’re actually living there. Now get out of your London apartment, grab your camera and make like a tourist for the day.

No sightseeing is complete without seeing the Queen’s Guards ceremony at Buckingham Palace. During the ceremony, the new guard takes over from the old guard, all to the accompaniment of a military band, escorting the guard to and from their barracks. The band’s repertoire ranges from marches to rock and pop. The ceremony takes place at 11:30 and lasts about 45 minutes in the forecourt of the Palace. Tourists who have this ceremony included in their itinerary arrive very early to grab their spots against the railings to get the best views. The ceremony takes place on odd days in winter, but daily from April to July. The Changing of the Guard Ceremony is rarely cancelled, except for very wet weather though timings may vary due to State Visits to the Palace.

Madame Tussauds Wax Museum is another well-known landmark where life images of famous celebrities, prominent political personalities and celebrated musicians the world over can be viewed. The London Dungeon will find you in the torture chambers, and gothic horrors given the history of this monument. London Zoo is another popular spot for families during the summer months. There are also botanical gardens to enjoy if you prefer a more relaxed setting.

If shopping is your mojo then Chinatown is the place to be. The shops are colourfully decorated and serve as a one-stop shop where you can find absolutely everything and even things you didn’t think you would ever want! Chinese New year is a festival that lights up London with fireworks and colourful street parties. London’s Tourist attractions are a must see if you are moving to London. You cannot be a proper Londoner until you have done them all!

London Bundle: The Residential Roam

Friday, May 28th, 2010

We’re going to move it on up a little North of our Shopping Spree bundle today to some charming residential neighborhoods of London.

Hop the Tube to Regent’s Park Underground station (Bakerloo line).  From here, we’re going to walk into, surprise, surprise…Regent’s Park!  Explore this vast park to your heart’s content—if you haven’t had breakfast yet, you can grab a bite at either the Boathouse or Garden Cafes, and do stroll through Queen Mary’s Rose Garden, the largest of its kind in London.  You will notice the Open Air Theatre as well, which runs performances from May through September, and in the Northern part of the park, you’ll find the zoo!

If you’ve had enough fresh air and are itching for a museum of sorts, just off the lower West corner of the park (near the Baker Street Tube) are the famous Madame Tussaud’s wax museum as well as the Sherlock Holmes museum.

From here, you can walk into Marylebone and acquaint yourself with this neighborhood and either go on foot or catch the Tube at Baker Street or Marylebone Underground stations to St. John’s Wood.  This upscale residential neighborhood is home to Paul McCartney and Abbey Road Studios (yes, you can even walk on the famous zebra stripe across Abbey Road as the Beatles did for the album cover of same name).  Sports enthusiasts will also find the Lord’s cricket pitch here where the Marylebone Cricket Club plays its matches.

If you follow St. John’s Road toward the West and hang a left onto Maida Vale, you will then gain exposure to yet another delightful and peaceful area—Maida Vale.  Here you’ll find the road made famous by Duffy’s song, “Warwick Avenue,” but of most aesthetic interest is Little Venice, so named because of its canals and boats.  This is such a fun spot for cafes and pubs, so this might be a good time to stop for lunch or even early dinner, depending on how your day’s been going.

Otherwise, if you hold out for dinner and are open to spicy international food, I absolutely recommend heading down the Maida Vale street, which will eventually become Edgware Road.  Here you will find a row of restaurants representing a range of Middle Eastern cuisine for very reasonable prices and can even treat yourself to a shisha and mint tea (hookah) after dinner out on the sidewalk.

The rest of the evening is up to you…if you’re a Paddington Bear fan, one little sidetrack you could make is to see Paddington Station where this little bear from Darkest Peru was discovered.  Otherwise, maybe go get some rest after this long, fun day!
