Relocating to London: City Living and Country Eating

Monday, March 14th, 2011

Author:  Colleen

If you’re researching your move to London, I don’t know if you realize what an impressive food culture you’re venturing into. The Brits generally get a bad rap for their food, but once you’re properly living in London and veering off the well-worn tourist path, you’ll discover its diverse, quality global offerings as well as delight in its traditional fare (see “Move to London and Eat Yer Humble Pie,” in homage of the British meat pie, for example).

One particularly lovely discovery I’ve made since relocating to London is a restaurant called Bumpkin. With two locations at present in west London (Notting Hill and South Kensington), Bumpkin serves up fresh, seasonal British foods that offer the cozy comfort of traditional country dishes with a cosmopolitan twist that reinvents each menu item with exciting flavor combinations. You can find the classic meat and potato fare along with superbly spiced fish, risotto, salads, etc. And it’s open all day, so whether you want brunch or dinner, creamy cappuccino or a fine wine, a light bite or a substantial dish to tuck into, Bumpkin and its casual chic ambiance is one that pleases a range of different tastes. That’s precisely why I like to take out-of-town visitors there; there’s something for everyone, and the staff is always very friendly and attentive.

Just another venue to add to your list as you anticipate your London move and will be keen to get out and explore new restaurant options after all is settled with your new London apartment!

Living in London: Dining Out on the Cheap and Healthy

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Author:  Colleen

For anyone moving to London, cost of living is always a primary concern. I usually make the blanket statement that the worst bit of it is what you’ll pay in rent on a London apartment, but otherwise, if you’re earning British pounds, it’ll all be relative. Eating out will almost always cost more (and be less healthy) than eating in, but I’ve recently tried two London restaurants I’d never been to before that offer a guilt-free chance to get out of said London apartment (especially this winter, when my cabin fever has been at its worst!).

Both venues are located near Smithfield, not a far walk from the St. Paul’s tube station on the Central line. It is only at one of them, however, where you can drink coffee brewed from beans extracted from Vietnamese weasel poop. I think you heard me correctly…

Starting with the one where you can’t order this, Amico Bio is tucked away in a cute little alley just outside of St. Bartholomew’s Church. The authentic Italian cuisine served here is organic and vegetarian. You’ll find that portions are just enough to satisfy without making you overly full or requiring a doggie-bag; consequently, you’ll have plenty of room to sample multiple courses, and menu prices justify it! I’m never hungry enough for the sweet thangs I covet at the end of a meal, but after an appetizer of pan-fried tofu and main of ravioli, I was all too willing and able to indulge in the generous serving of cantucci biscuits for dessert, which were served with a traditional passito wine for dipping.

So getting around to where you can order a beverage that technically owes its great taste to feces, if you cross through the Smithfield Market and continue on up the road aways into Clerkenwell, you will come upon Pho. (Other London locations include Soho, Oxford Circus, and Shepherds Bush) The authentic Vietnamese cuisine served here comes in generous portions, and though you have a choice of vegetarian and meat options, all dishes are prepared on site with fresh ingredients and are low in fat while high in vitamins and minerals. My husband and I split a papaya salad with chicken as a starter and each had a giant bowl of their bun noodles as our main before treating ourselves to the not-so inexpensive portion of our evening: the £6 coffee. I know you think I’m kidding about this, but Pho’s weasel coffee is the phenomenal result of Vietnamese weasels eating coffee beans and passing them through their digestive tract. I highly recommend it with the condensed milk, but either way, I’ll attest it is one good cup a’ Joe that’s worth the cost, especially when the rest of the meal is so reasonable.

So that’s my food critique for the week, folks. Either restaurant will surprise your taste buds with an explosion of fresh new fusions of flavor, just two of the many exceptional places to dine once you’ve made your London relocation.

London Relocation Recommends…

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Coming out of the weekend, my colleague Mat and I were discussing our latest dining experiences and thought we’d share them with you!

Little Bay (www.littlebay.co.uk)

With locations in Kilburn, Farringdon, Battersea, and Croyden, Little Bay offers an exotic and eclectic atmosphere  with a contemporary European menu and budget-friendly pricing.  Mat says:

“Great little restaurant.  Fantastic feel and amazing value for the money.  Highly recommended.”

Wahaca (www.wahaca.co.uk)

Following a friend’s recommendation, I finally checked out this little treasure-o-Mexican cuisine last night.  With locations in Covent Garden, Shepherds Bush, and Wimbledon, Wahaca serves Mexican market food in a contemporary yet casual environment.  Also very reasonably priced, the savory dishes are served tapas style or as full-size entrees—wash it down with a sweet Wahaca margarita!

And if you’d like to make a few extra pounds to put towards dining out, London Relocation Ltd. is presently seeking a dynamic sales agent (how’s that for a none-too-subtle segue…).  If you’re interested in taking on an integral role and further developing the corporate side of our business, please contact Mat Paramor at mat@londonrelocation.co.uk for more details!

Moving from America to London? No Need to Say ‘Adios’ to Chipotle!

Don't be foiled again by UK promises of decent burritos--Chipotle is here to the rescue!

Don't be foiled again by UK promises of decent burritos--Chipotle is here to the rescue!

It’s true!  It’s true!!  Chipotle is coming to London!  Americans moving to London and those of you already here, prepare to tuck into a taste of the familiar…oooohhh siiiiii…

Click here to read Food Business Review’s article confirming this blessed event:  http://www.food-business-review.com/news/chipotle_finalizes_location_in_london_091117

We’re slated for April 2010, which gives us just enough time to shed our Christmas weight-gain so we can justify those mammoth-sized burritos.  This is so glorious, when good Mexican food—or, at least, the American take on Mexican food—can be difficult enough to find in the UK (see our previous blog posts Quest For a Decent Taco:  Parts Uno and Dos.  A worthy substitute, if not contender, however, has been Chilango, although there are only a couple locations in existence in the London area right now on Fleet Street in the City and Upper Street in Angel, Islington.  It is because of Chilango’s scarcity and the huge demand for a Chipotle-type burrito that lines literally form outside of Chilango’s door, and you’re better off ordering in advance.

Perhaps London Relocation Ltd. will be able to find you a London property within good commuting distance of this Mexican fast-food oasis.  At any rate, we wish you sweet dreams as visions of refried beans and tortillas dance in your head :)

London Relocation Adds Spice to Your Life

Mind the Baba Ganoush

Mind the Baba Ganoush

When you’ve had your fill of mushy peas or bubble and squeak at the pubs, take a stroll or catch the Tube to Edgware Road for a taste of the exotic.  Dozens of restaurants line either side of this mecca of authentic, affordable ethnic food–far more reasonable than the trendy wannabes to be found in more gentrified neighborhoods.  On and near the street are Lebanese, Turkish, Iranian, Pakistani, and assorted other types of cuisine, and you never know when a belly dancer may come with your meal.  Once your own belly is filled, if the sky is clear and air is calm, you can continue fueling your inner peace with an apple-flavoured shisha (hookah) as you people-watch from the sidewalk.

When you’ve relocated to London, it’s time to veer off the well-worn, touristed path and eat like a local.
