Relocation to London – Extra! Extra! Read All About It!- Image via Wikipedia

Your relocation to London is going to be one of the most exciting times in your life. You’ll have to get used to living in a foreign country and one of the largest cities in Europe. The cultural differences can seen quite daunting at first but with a little time, some good humor and a dash of curiosity, you’ll be able to absorb and discover the cultures that make up this historic and yet thoroughly modern city.

One of the biggest differences and certainly one that you’ll notice the moment you arrive is the difference in television programming between the UK and the USA. If you’re an American moving to London, you may find it quite a shock. Even the news is quite different and if you want to get a taste of the news from home, you’ll have to get hooked up to the satellite companies to get CNN.

The first difference that you’ll notice is that events happening in America are not considered to be headline news. Breaking news in the States falls under world news and even then it will probably fall somewhere behind what is happening in Europe and even Asia on the list of importance.

If you want to get clued up about living in London and what really interests people, you should consider a crash course in learning about the EU. It’ll help greatly when you’re chatting to your colleagues at your new job and even in your community if you have some idea of what is happening and what is considered news in London.

The biggest news in London at the moment is in fact the News! One of the oldest tabloid papers in the world, the News of the World, is closing down. The newspaper is 168 years old and has been at the dodgy end of tabloid news and paparazzi exposes for years. The reason for its closure is not a financial one, but an honest to goodness scandal, of Watergate proportions. The News of the World is reported to have hacked into the phones of politicians, celebs and victims of crime in the desperate race to be the rag that breaks the story first. While America has an active and scurrilous tabloid press problem, in England and Europe the paparazzi are relentless and even resort to underhand and criminal activities to get their stories.

Today will be the last edition of the newspaper that has been breaking news of celebrity sex scandals and political power plays for years and as such it is the end of an era. If you have recently completed your international relocation to London I’d grab a copy of the paper today, just for posterity. While it may not be serious news, it certainly is sensational news, and even Paris Hilton makes the headlines in London!

Relocation to London – A Royal Affair

Relocation to London – A Royal Affair

Relocation to London – A Royal Affair- Image via Wikipedia

It’s been ‘the’ year for relocation to London, and the Royal Wedding in April has added a touch of romance and excitement to the monarchy. The Royal family is inextricably linked to the city of London and even if you weren’t living in London when Prince William married Katherine Middleton in April, you’ll have seen the images beamed around the world by the media.

When you’re settled into your new London flat and finished all the details of your relocation to London then  you can start exploring the city and what better place to start than to visit the site of the Royal Wedding. You can do a number of tours in London that take in the Royal palaces, museums and parks, but you don’t have to dwell in history of the monarchy to enjoy your tour. The monarchy is a vibrant and up to date part of modern London and England.

Wills and Kate: A modern fairy tale

While there has been a certain amount of cynicism leveled at the royal family of late, it appears that the heir to the throne has been able to follow his heart and the path of true love when it came time for him to choose his bride. You have to understand what a decision it must have been for Prince William to marry his long time girlfriend, commoner, Katherine Middleton. The prince is going to be the King of England one day and he still married the girl of his dreams, and a commoner.

You will not have to spend much time in the city after your relocation to London to realize that although it is invisible, there is a definite line still drawn between the class of the nobility and the rest of us. It IS a big deal that a future King of England has married someone of common birth; it certainly would not have been allowed twenty years ago. Yes. That recently.

The story of William and Katherine is a modern fairy tale that says as much about the future of the monarchy in England as it does about the couple themselves.

Prince William met his wife when they were both students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. They were both studying the same Art history course, although William moved to study geography. The couple lived n rented digs with a number of students. The couple stayed out of the media spotlight during their time at St. Andrews due to the fact that the Queen had asked all of the world’s press to stay away from the prince during his time as an undergraduate. It was in this space of privacy and away from the glare of the media eye that the couple fell in love.

The couple graduated from the university in 2005 and not long after that the news of their relationship was splashed over the world after they were spotted skiing in Klosters, Switzerland.

It must have been daunting for the young middle class Katherine who has no royal or noble family connections. Her parents run a successful mail order party décor company and Kate and her family lived in a modern home in Berkshire. The constant intrusion of the paparazzi is in some part responsible for their break up in 2007. Kate just needed a break and William needed to make the decision that would affect the rest of his life, and the future of his country.

Although the couple reunited soon after, it was still a while before the world started to get the idea that Katherine would be joining the royal family. Kate slowly started being invited to official and private family events and function and in 2010 the couple announced their engagement to the world.

While the world was fascinated by the pomp and circumstance of a royal wedding, they were also drawn to the event like never before because of the similarities and familiarity of their love story. The love story that was played out on the center stage of the magnificent city of London is in fact, our story as well.

Relocation IN London: A Quick Way to Find a London Apartment if You Already Live in London

Thursday July 7th, 2011

Map of Central London

Making the relocation IN London - moving from one London apartment to another. Image via Wikipedia

Author:  Colleen

As a London relocation company that services people moving to London from all over the world, we often gear our blog posts toward those making an international relocation to the UK. The fact is, though, that we help anyone looking for their ideal London apartment to rent, whether you’re first moving here or already live in London.

One of the obvious benefits of employing a London relocation agent in the case of an international relocation to London is to compensate for unfamiliarity with the lay of the land—if you’ve never lived in London and haven’t toured it extensively before, how do you know where to start learning which neighborhood suits you best and how the property market works differently, right?

Therein lies the rub with locals and expats already living in London. They do know the neighborhoods better and have at least a basic understanding of the market from their previous flat-finding experience. It’s precisely this that leads London locals to believe they can tackle flat-finding all on their own, and surely they can (they have the added advantage of already having a London home-base to live in while they look), but even they can benefit from using London relocation services if time is of the essence.

What prompts this thought for me right now is a friend of mine who has lived in London a couple years already with her husband and is looking for a new London apartment to move into this fall. She’s very savvy with the city and doesn’t work full-time, so has the flexibility to look around that her husband doesn’t. She’d viewed at least a couple over the weekend, and I’d met up with her Tuesday to view three flats, and then she’d seen four others that same day. Today she saw another, and tomorrow she’ll see six more. Add that all together, and London Relocation still has shown more flats than that to one client in one day. When my friend’s husband has to leave work early multiple days a week as well to view her daytime shortlist in the evening, it’s an inconvenience. So even this couple, with one person available during the weekdays, could benefit from a one-day service—how does a single person who works full-time accomplish it alone? Searches are left to the weekends and evenings unless taking a day off work, and even evening viewings can mean having to leave work early. And what’s available one day isn’t necessarily the next (especially in the summer!!). It’s a pain. And of the apartments my friend is viewing, only a handful have actually been for a move-in date that coincides with their existing lease. Others are for an earlier date that would require unlikely negotiation with the landlord to break the lease early by a month or two without having to still pay that rent in full or bear the burden of finding a new tenant themselves.

I’m just sayin’. London Relocation agents exhaust the available properties in a given area to find precisely those that are within your budget and moving time-frame. They’ll show them to you in one day and negotiate the lease that same evening. Bodda-boom, bodda-bing. So even if you’re just making the relocation in London and not going very far within territory that’s familiar to you, a London relocation agency is still a worthwhile option to consider.

Relocation to London – “Summertime, And The Living Is Easy…”

Thursday July 7th, 2011

Relocation to London – “Summertime, And The Living Is Easy…”

Relocation to London – “Summertime, And The Living Is Easy…” - Image via Wikipedia

Relocation to London in the summer months is one of the most ideal times to be moving to London. Days are long, the nights are warm and there is so much to do. If you’ve been here for quite some time already, you probably know that the Wimbledon’s Tennis Championships have just finished. Yes, the men’s finals have brought one of London’s (and the world’s) most celebrated annual events to a close.  The summer suddenly feels quite empty. It’s only July, so don’t worry about getting your fill of London before you start your new job, there are other summer highlights to go yet.

First up, for anyone who loves their music, there’s the iTunes Festival at Camden’s Roundhouse. Running for the entire month of July.  The festival will host performances from over 60 artists, each of which will being recorded by Apple and available on iTunes. Previous shows have seen artists such as Faithless, Goldfrapp, The Scissor Sisters and Ozzy Osbourne performing, so you’ll be sure to find something with a London flavor.

Further for the musically inclined, you can go to the “Summer Swing,” running from July 6-10. Bring a picnic lunch and settle down to listen to some upbeat and lively music.

For something a bit more relaxed, get to Theatre Square on the South Bank for a sleepover. No, seriously. On the 26th of August, Theatre Square will be turned into a giant public campsite. Bring your sleeping bags, and don’t forget your marshmallows for roasting on the fire. With events for the evening that include a campfire sing-song and tours from archaeologists along the riverbank; you might not be getting that much sleep!

For more night-time adventure, go to Canary Wharf where can take part in a treasure hunt. You’ll be given a few clues that that will take you to a secret party. If you’re new to London, you might want to give this a shot as it’s a particularly fun way of learning your way around the city, and takes place throughout the summer months.

So it might be July but as far as London’s concerned, the summer has barely started. If you have only just finished your relocation to London, there is still plenty of summer for you to do any of the above and more.  International relocation in the summertime: the perfect time of year to be moving to London.

Relocation UK – What Do You Really Need?

Relocation UK – What Do You Really Need?- Image via Wikipedia

When you’re contemplating international relocation, or are an American moving to London you will want to get things sorted out before you leave. You can start making lists and researching the city to try and learn as much as possible about it or you can make a list of what YOU really need and let the professionals handle it for you.

Accommodation Action Stations

Finding a living accommodation is going to be the hardest part of your relocation to London. If you arrive after your relocation in London and are going to start looking then,  you may find that the process can take weeks rather than days. It is better to make a list of the amenities that you require and then decide upon a professional London relocation services company to find properties that fit around your needs.

When you’re making a list of accommodation must-haves consider the following:

  • Do you want to live right in the city when you relocate to London? There are people that enjoy the bustle of a 24 hour city lifestyle and those who prefer to have a little bit of peace and quiet when they come home from work. The city of London really rocks, so if you’re not all that keen on being one of the 24-hour hum of an urban experience, then consider living just a little bit further out of London near one of the green-belt areas.
  • What amenities do you need to be within walking distance from your London apartment? This is an important aspect of choosing a new location aftyer your international relocation. Transport is always going to be an issue while you are living in London so you need to establish which amenities you need to be able to walk to. Schools are particularly important as are doctors, hospitals, community centers and grocery stores. You don’t’ want to have to take three buses and a train to get to your favorite branch of Sainsbury’s on a daily basis.

Figure out what are the important needs for you and your family, and then provide your London relocation agent with a list of your requirements. Not only does a professional relocation agent know London, they also know how to get a lease negotiated for foreigners. International relocation to London can be made easier by working with a London relocation agent in advance. Taking time out when you first arrive to enjoy the city should be high on your priority list, you will be able to do that once you’ve found your new London home.

Relocation to London – Getting To Know The UK Income Tax System

Wednesday July 6th, 2011

Relocation to London - Getting To Know The UK Income Tax System

Relocation to London - Getting To Know The UK Income Tax System Image via Wikipedia

After you are settled into your new London apartment, you’ll be heading off to earn your crust. Working in London will be quite different to what you are used to. One of the biggest differences is the way that you are taxed in the UK.

Learning about tax when you’re in the middle of an international relocation can save you hundreds of pounds each year. It’s a good idea to have an understanding of the way taxes work as part of your relocation to London. How will your income be affected in a country other than your own?

Making Tax Less Taxing

Each tax year is from April 6 in any year to April 5 of the next year.  Income Tax is payable by both employed- and self-employed individuals who earn above a specific level.  In the United Kingdom, all of your benefits will be taxed. This includes State-, Company- and Personal Pensions, as well as benefits such as a Jobseeker’s Allowance, Weekly Bereavement Allowance, Carer’s Allowance and the Incapacity Benefit.  Interest on most savings, dividends, rental income of more than £4,250 a year (£2,215 if split jointly) and income received from a trust, etc. are tax deductable.

In addition to paying Income Tax, you are also required to pay National Insurance Contributions (NICs). Tax is generally paid each time you are paid by your employer; this is known as pay-as-you-earn (PAYE). As a foreigner moving to London, you need to make sure that you have a good tax advisor to help you with your tax requirements in the UK as well as your existing tax requirements back home. Don’t be caught short by paying double tax!

The tax laws in the UK allow a great deal of leeway and a good tax advisor will help you get as much back in the form of tax credits and exemptions. All taxpayers are allowed a certain amount of tax-free income (a Personal Allowance).  There are also other forms of non-taxable income.  If you are a full-time student working only during the holiday periods and you expect to earn less than the Personal Allowance during the whole of the next tax year (until 5 April) and intend to continue studying until after 5 April of the following year, you may apply to receive your wages without tax being deducted.

Once you have your tax issues sorted you’ll find that your relocation to the UK will be a less taxing experience…

Relocation UK – Top Tips for Moving to London

Relocation UK – Top Tips for Moving to London

Relocation UK – Top Tips for Moving to London - Image via Wikipedia

If you have been given the opportunity to live and work in London for the next few years, you’re about to embark on a life changing experience and adventure. Moving to London can be a daunting and stressful time and one of the best ways to make it hassle free and easy is to use the services of a company that specializes in London relocation services. It’s like having a trusted friend waiting for you when you touch down at Heathrow. Your London relocation agents will be able to help you with the big details of your move, including finding a new London apartment, as well as opening a bank account and dealing with smaller details like registering at the council and a doctor.

One of the most important details is getting a National Insurance number. If you’re being moved to London by your company then they will probably take care of the details for you. But what about your partner or spouse? You can ask your London relocation services company to help you with applying for an NI card. The purpose of an NI card and number is to allow the government to track taxes and tax payments. If you don’t have an NI number you’ll be paying the emergency tax rate, which is markedly higher than usual. An NI number also entitles you to free health care from all doctors and hospitals in London, as well as making applying for credit and store cards much easier.

Opening a UK bank account is also one of the first things you’ll want to do. If you carry on using your debit or credit cards from home, you’ll be paying through the nose for commissions on buying foreign exchange as well as increased bank charges and fees. Having a bank account in the UK is vital if you intend to rent or even buy property. It will also help you to get a phone contract, credit for car loans and a host of banking and financial services that you may need when you are moving to London.

If you’re in any doubt then the best thing you can do is leave your worries in the capable hands of one of the professional London relocation agents. They know how to get you moved in and set up faster than anyone.

Relocation to London – Hassles or Help

Image via Wikipedia

If you’re have been given the opportunity to live and work in the great city of London, then you’ll want to get over as fast as possible to begin your adventure. Relocation to London is more complicated than just slinging your stuff in a backpack and heading for the airport, although many people do that and find it an exhilarating way to see the world.

You’ll probably be moving to London, for work; you may have been transferred through your company back home, or starting a new job with a new company, in a new city. For even the most hardened travelers it can be daunting to leave behind everything you know and love and head off to London for a few years. If you want to make your transatlantic pond hopping successful then you should consider getting an expert to help you with your UK relocation details.

The biggest factor in moving to London is finding the right place to stay. As a foreigner, you may find it quite difficult to get a rental apartment as fast as you’d like, and there can be a mountain of paperwork and banking to do before your lease will be accepted. Working with a professional firm of London relocation agents will take the guesswork and the hassle out of finding a new home for you. In fact, you can get everything sorted out through a good relocation agent in a couple of days, instead of the weeks it may take if you’re going it alone.

It’s not just accommodation that you need when you’re moving to London. There are a myriad of details that a good relocation service will be able to help you with:

  • Opening a London bank account. This can be tricky if you don’t have the paperwork that you need. A relocation agent will be able to tell you what you need to bring with you in terms of complete paperwork so opening a bank account can be done the very day that you arrive.
  • Registering with the council: When you rent an apartment you’ll have to register with the local council. Again, a professional London relocation services business will be able to handle all of that for you without you having to sweat the details.

Moving to London can be challenging, but with the right help and information you’ll be settled in and enjoying everything that this fascinating city has to offer.

Living in London – London’s Inner City Wildlife

Living in London – London’s Inner City Wildlife

Living in London – London’s Inner City Wildlife- Image via Wikipedia

Moving to London, and having taken in all the stereotypes of the city that culture has to offer, it’s likely that one thing you won’t associate with the city is animals. Yes, it’s a big city and it’s to be expected that a big city will have a zoo, but the city of London is sadly the victim of a stereotype that says that the only things that it probably has to offer are buildings, restaurants, theatre, rain and the Queen. There are other attractions to living in London and finding them while you explore your new home town is going to be one of the most exciting aspects of moving to London. Take this then as additional education in London Life. This is especially important if you’re moving to London with kids as there are few easier ways to educate your kids while showing them a good time than by taking them to the zoo.

An obvious first stop would be the appropriately named London Zoo. Here you’ll find a wide variety of animals, including lions, tigers, giant anteaters, spider-monkeys, gorillas, penguins, vultures, cobras and very scary Komodo Dragons. There’s also the option of visiting the baby-shelter where you can see the newborns (even a baby rhino), especially fascinating if you’ve brought your own little ones along.

Swing on over to the Battersea Park Children’s Zoo if you’re up for more wildlife hijinks. Like the London Zoo, you’ll can also adopt an animal if it takes your fancy. It’s the kind of place that promises a more face-to-face encounter with its furry residents, which include monkeys, chipmunks and meerkats.

If you’d like to complete your wildlife education after going to the zoo, drop in at the London Sealife Aquarium. The aquarium has a fascinating variety of creatures on display, with over five hundred species from all over the world. Bright orange clownfish, octopus, penguins and forty different kinds of shark are but a few of the animals you’ll see. They even have crocodiles.

So if you’re moving to London, you’ll soon discover that this city offers so much more than you expected.

Living in London – If You Can’t Have an Apple a Day…

Living in London – If You Can’t Have an Apple a Day...

Living in London – If You Can’t Have an Apple a Day...- Image via Wikipedia

Moving to London is an undeniably exciting undertaking. Whether you’re going by yourself or with a loved one or loved ones, it means experiencing and adapting to a new home, learning about a new culture, meeting new people and making new friends. But as appealing and as fun and it is, it also means that you’ll be taking many of the concerns that you had in your former country and bringing them here to your new homeland. An unavoidable concern no matter where you go or who you are is the state of your health and that of those closest to you.

You could catch something, fall victim to some accident or any of a hundred other things could spring up unexpectedly. You have to be prepared for whatever could come your way and in the case of your health, being prepared means finding a doctor. While you might want to save yourself the hassle and rather just head off to a hospital should an emergency arise, having a personal GP is better as you’ll have someone who will be able to cater to you on a more personal level and, more importantly, someone who’ll be able to warn you and properly help you avoid something that could come up.

The first stop for you would be a visit to the National Health Services (NHS) website. The page has very useful ‘find a doctor’ function. Type in your postal code and you’ll get a list of all the doctors practicing in your area. For more information, click on any of the names that catch your eye and you’ll get information about the services that they offer, the doctors practicing there, and opening and closing times. You’ll get directions on how to get there as well as assistance on registering as a new patient. Also keep an eye out for whether the surgery you’re applying to as a patient is currently accepting new patients.

You’re moving to London and being certain of the state of your health is one of the most important aspects of making certain that your stay here will be an enjoyable one.

Just as soon as your London relocation services have you settled into your new London flat then you need to head out and explore the town. If it is your first time, then you will take a couple of months to visit all of the well known tourist attractions and take hundreds of photos of the Changing on the Guard at Buckingham palace and of the view from the London Eye. Once you’ve done everything in the guidebooks, and you’re a real Londoner, then you might want to try heading off the beaten path for your weekend excursions.

Colorful Camden

Camden is an area of London that has one of the greatest community vibes in the city. This is a neighborhood devoted to everyone and everything that happens. They even have their own website so you know exactly what is going down at any moment and there is a lot to enjoy when you visit Camden.

The area is most famous for the Camden Market. It one of London’s most visited tourist attractions, but real Londoner’s use the back streets and hidden alleys to find the true Camden experience. The easiest way to get to Camden is to take the tube. Camden is found in Zone 2 and is located in north London making it right at the centre of the transport network. You can get off the tube at the Camden Town Station, or at Chalk Farm Road, which are both on the Northern Line.

The market is open every day of the year except for Christmas Day from 10am – 6pm and it is very busy, especially on weekends during the summer months. Surrounding the market, you’ll find all sorts of specialty stores, fine restaurants and alfresco dining to enjoy. If you have kids then why not combine a trip to Camden market with a trip to London Zoo. It’s about ten minutes walk between the two.

If you want to see how Camden rocks then you have to look out for the monthly events and festivals that they have all year round. Great music, fine food and some of the most interesting shopping to be had in London. You’re a Londoner now, and moving to London should be about exploring your new home and finding your favorite places.

It may be that your employer has organized temporary accommodation for you for a few weeks, but you’ll soon have to find something more permanent and go about the challenge of making London your home. When you are considering which relocation companies to choose, you should look at what they offer you in terms of speed, professionalism and experience.

  • How well do they know London? Having local knowledge and expertise is essential if you’re going to find the right London apartment. London is a big city and each neighborhood has its own quirks, strengths and weaknesses according to your requirements. Having an insider into the intricacies of living in London is a big help.

Moving to London – As You Touchdown…

Thursday June 30th, 2011

Moving to London – As You Touchdown…

Moving to London – As You Touchdown…- Image via Wikipedia

As soon as you know that you are moving to London, you should make a list of the essential tasks that you have to do as soon as you touch down. If you’re using a London relocation services company to help you with the big move, then they may be able to help you get set up and settled in even faster.

The most important thing you should do when you arrive is to get in contact with your family back home to let them know that you’re enjoying London. If you have brought your mobile phone with you, make sure it will work on the British networks and then get a SIM card. It can be quite a process to get a contract through one of the service providers, so your best bet is to get a Pay-as-you-Go SIM card which will allow you to add credit when you need it. The most popular mobile phone operators in London are Vodafone, O2, Orange and T-Mobile. If you don’t have a phone then you can purchase one with SIM card at most major retail outlets in your neighborhood.

To get around London, you do not need a car. In fact you’d be advised to avoid all forms of car ownership for the duration, unless you rent a car for the day to travel out of London. The most efficient way of getting around London is by tube, train, bus or taxi. The first step? Get yourself an Oyster Card. This is the cheapest, safest and fastest way to pay for your travel around London. It looks like a bank card and all you do is load it with credit for your travel, and then swipe it on all tubes, buses and trains. No cash, no fuss. Easy does it.

You’ll also need to think of setting up a bank account as soon as you arrive in London. It’s not difficult, but it may be a bit time consuming, so be prepared to bring ALL of your paperwork with you. If you are using an international relocation company then ask them to guide you through the process and advise you on all of the possible paperwork that you might need when you’re moving to London.

If you’re moving to London or you’ve just moved here, chances are that you’re still trying to adjust yourself to your new home. The weather, the people, the geography, the culture; there’s no place like home. And it’s not only adjusting to your new home that can be a challenge, but also letting go of all those things you can’t do back home in the States. There’s a word for this condition: homesickness. And if you’ve fallen victim to it, don’t worry as you’re not the first and you won’t be the last. There are ways to stave off the feeling of being homesick to make your adjustment to your new home easier. It may take some effort on your part, but you can still do a lot of the things from back home in your new home in London.

Take barbecuing for example. It’s one of those things that can bring back the feeling of home in a single bite. London does allow you to have a barbecue on your property, so long as you’re practicing the proper safety measures and you have the space to allow for it. It’s not very sensible to start up a fire in your living room so if you don’t have the room, you might have to make other plans. Also, let your neighbors know what you’re doing. Who knows, they may have problems with it (the smell could be an issue) or you could invite them over. You’re new to the neighborhood, so be decent about things.

Contrary to popular belief held by many Londoners, there many places available for the purpose of barbecuing. If you don’t have the space to have a barbecue (and that’s also taking into account the amount of people you may wish to have over), then there are parks in London where you could have one. Just be sure to check if you will be allowed to barbecue so that you avoid the risk of incurring a fine.

Moving to London doesn’t have to be a painful experience if you can figure out how to comfortably adjust to your new home.
