Living in London – Shopping in Different Places

The best way to experience London after you have completed you Move to London is to get out of your new London apartment and explore some of the flea markets that London is famous for. Not only will you be able to pick up some great items at bargain prices. It is a way of getting out and experiencing London life.

Spitalfields Market

Open Monday to Friday from 10am – 4pm and Sundays from 9am – 5pm, but, in common with many of the main markets in London, is at its busiest on Sundays when all shops and stalls are open. Thursdays specialise in antiques, and Fridays in fashion and art. Old Spitalfields has been the site of a market since the 1640’s and specialises in arts and crafts, furniture, designer clothing, gifts and food. Many of the goods on offer are sourced from around the world, and this is the place to go for unusual, eco and organic goods. Old Spitalfields market is set in a Victorian market hall, and is very convenient if you’d like to visit a market but stay out of the rain! Spitalfields Arts Market, close to Old Spitalfields market offers a range of art, sculpture and photography from both established and up-and-coming artists. There are a range of cafes and restaurants in the area, including Giraffe, which offers global food and world music, and Carluccio’s café and deli for great Italian food. There are regular free community events staged at the Arts market including fashion shows and concerts. Nearest tube stations are Central, Hammersmith and City, District, Circle and Metroplitan.

Borough Market

Borough Market is a gourmet food market, which is open Thursday –Sunday at the following times: Thursday 11:00 am- 5:00 pm; Fri 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm; Sat 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. There are stalls with fresh produce from around the country including meats, cider, cheeses, freshly baked bread and pastries, game and fruit and vegetables. There are also stalls which sell foodstuffs from around Europe. The market is also open as a wholesale market throughout the week. It is London’s oldest food market, and definitely a tempting place to go on an empty stomach! If you love spending money at farmers’ markets, and you love buying fabulous fresh food and sampling all kinds of stuff that you never tried before, this is your place. Neal’s Yard Dairy supplies a huge variety of cheeses, and Monmouth coffee comes highly recommended. Be warned that this market can get extremely crowded, and you might struggle for a seat in a pub- but then there are all those food stalls to sample anyway… Some of the food can be pricey, and if you’re looking for food bargains, try Brixton Market instead. Nearest tube stations are London Bridge and Borough.

East Siiide! : Markets

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

This guest post comes to us compliments of one of our fabulous London Living Londonistas, Jessica.

When my husband and I moved from our corporate flat to our own place just a 25 minute walk north to Hackney, I didn’t know what to expect and oddly enough my main concern was “Where am I going to go grocery shopping?” Our last place was in walking distance to a Waitrose, a Tesco and most importantly, Borough Market where we had become familiar faces on Saturday mornings to our favorite vendors. Walking back from these places without a full backpack is not an option.

One Google search later and wouldn’t you know it these are our local markets:

Broadway Market.
Open Saturdays 9am – 5pm. Lots of fresh produce, meats, cheeses, clothes and hot lunch options.
The street is lined with shops and cafes to poke in and out of as you shop. Grab lunch and take a walk through London Fields or along the canal.

London Fields Market
Open Sundays 10am – 2pm. Lots of fresh produce, meats, cheeses, pasta and more.

Columbia Road Flower Market
Open Sundays 8am – 3pm (ish). Flowers, flowers and more flowers. Oh and plants, herbs, cafes and pubs too! Go at the end of the day for great deals.
The street is lined with shops and cafes to poke in and out of as you shop.

Back Yard / Up Market
Back Yard Market is open Saturday 11am – 6pm and Sunday 10am – 5pm
Up Market is open Sunday 10am – 5pm

You name it, they sell it. There are food stalls inside and out, a beer garden, vintage warehouse, art galleries, produce, music and that doesn’t even include the shops along the street!

Spitalfields Market
Thu: Antiques & vintage 10am – 4pm
Fri: Fashion & art 10am – 4pm
Sun: Busiest day – all shops & all stalls 9am – 5pm

You name it, they sell it. Sometimes there is music or an outdoor beer garden happening.

Hoxton Street Market
Open Monday through Saturday 7:30am – 6pm. Go on Saturday, it has the most stalls open.

You name it, they sell it and it is good and cheap!

Check out the individual website for events happening in and around the markets. Up Market and Spitalfields Market specifically have various free events happening all the time. Enjoy!

What to Do With an Extra Day in London?

Friday, April 16th, 2010

It’s eerily quiet in London as the airspace over Europe is empty of anything but birds and clouds.  A bizarre turn of events yesterday with Iceland’s volcano eruption, which has grounded the planes.  Makes for an interesting and surely frustrating predicament for travelers who are stuck where they’re at.

I’m benefitting, though, because it means I get to catch up with a couple former colleagues of mine who had expected to only zip in and out of London for a conference and are now stranded here until at least tomorrow.  We’re heading over to the Churchill Arms tonight, which provides the best Springtime eye candy with its exterior pimped out with flower boxes all a-bloom.  As they seek to kill time with this unexpectedly lengthened London holiday, I also recommended to them a stroll through Hyde Park (near their hotel), perhaps visiting the Enchanted Palace exhibition at the opposite end in Kensington Gardens, and giving Portobello Road a wander.  But I’m biased, of course, in bringing them in this direction because my office is located in Notting Hill :) .

Our fellow friend and former colleague who also lives in London likewise offered up an easy London-in-a-day sampler that I think is great to share with you if you’re relocating to London and want to familiarize yourself quickly with some its city center flavor or if you’ve already done the London move and are prepping to entertain your visitors.  In addition to the usual touristed points-of-interest of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Tower Bridge, and the Tower of London, she recommends Borough Market (near London Bridge) for lunch and then a stroll along the water, with the option of either crossing the river to St. Paul’s Cathedral or delving into the arts on the Southbank at Tate Modern and/or the Globe Theatre.

And there you have it.  The mild air outside my window is beckoning me outside, so I’m off to meet a friend first at Kitchen & Pantry here in Notting Hill before it’s pub time.  Hopefully you’ll be able to spare plenty of time for exploring London like this with all those days London Relocation Ltd. will save you in flat-searching.  Have a lovely weekend!
