London Relocation is Psyched About Londontopia!

Since moving to London and working for the London Relocation agency, I’ve been so giddy to have discovered the website Anglotopia. Dedicated to die-hard anglophiles (that’s people who love England; get your mind out of the gutter…), this is your prime online resource for UK pop culture, history, travel, and on and on—it’s ideal even (if not especially) for those having to worship Britannia from afar, and a fine homage to the country I’ve come to genuinely love from right up close.

If you’re relocating to London specifically, it gets even better. Anglotopia founder, Jonathan Thomas, has now launched…(wait for it)…LONDONTOPIA!

(Maybe my all-caps/bold/italics/exclamation point would’ve had greater impact had I not already given away “Londontopia” in my blog title…so much for nail-biting suspense.)

Anyways, yes. Londontopia.net, dedicated to endless goings-on occurring in this English capital every day. If you’re at all apprehensive about moving to London or, on the contrary, peeing your pants to get over here, then as long as this resource indeed mirrors the quality and comprehensiveness of its sister site, you’ll get to immerse yourself in your future environment and be apprised of its news in advance.

So we’re already feelin’ the London blog love for this new site as it’s a perfect complement to us here at the London Relocation blog, where we aim to help you plan out your move and prepare for your finding that London apartment so you can live that blissful London life in the Utopia that is London, UK :) .

Tuesday Tidbits at London Relocation

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

This is going to be one of my more all-over-the-place posts, giving you a glimpse at an average day in the life of a Londoner.

It’s a busy week ahead as I prepare to fly home for Chicago on Friday, and mixed in with my packing are a couple great visitors.  Very excited about today in particular, as one of the top Anglophiles is in London this week – Jonathan Thomas of Anglotopia!  I’ve given a shout-out to Anglotopia here before (“London Relocation Loves Anglotopia” post) and have the privilege of meeting with Jonathan this afternoon for lunch.  In selecting a central meeting place, we’ve opted for Ye Olde Cheschire Cheese off of Fleet Street (yes, the Fleet Street of Demon Barber renown).  Rebuilt in 1667 after the Great Fire, it is believed that its cellars date back to a monastery that once stood on the site, dating back to the 13th century.  So, in about a half hour I’ll be catching the Central Line at Notting Hill Gate tube station.

I always enjoy an opportunity to venture into the City centre, especially on a gorgeous sunny day like today.  It is unreal how warm this UK summer has been so far; unfortunately, the grass is the casualty—I’ve never seen the UK so brown.  I’m still hoping to sneak a peek, though, at how the gardens of New Square off of Chancery Lane are holding up, as well as venture off to Sports Direct for a UK sports-related birthday present for my nephew—they usually have stellar sales and am hoping now that England is out of the World Cup that one good outcome is slashed prices on football paraphrenalia :)   And what a lovely thing ’tis that I can run such simple errands with St. Paul’s Cathedral as my backdrop, which is an aspect of London that makes the everyday extraordinary.  The spouse works around there, too, so perhaps I’ll catch him for a smooch before having to return home for…

…the Virgin Media guy.  When you move to London and set up your utilities, a few options you have for TV/phone/internet packages are Virgin, British Telecom (BT), Onetel, and Sky.  Londonistas from our London Living network have been asking me lately about this, and I’ve related to them that, while we might have opted for Sky for its movie channels, it required a landline, which we don’t have.  Virgin Media, then, has been the provider of choice, and we’ve been so far satisfied with their broadband and cable (complete with On-Demand movies and television shows as well as DVR functionality to record and stop/rewind/fast-forward live TV); the only issue we’re encountering now is the not-so-”Smart Card” we recently received in the mail and had to swap into our box…alas.  Not the best timing with the World Cup and Wimbledon underway, is it.

*sigh*  After that, I’m sheh-juled to meet with another friend in town with his family.  Today, they’re off on the Stonehenge/Bath bus day-tour, so their return should perfectly coordinate with my 4-7pm cable-guy window.  As they’re staying in Earls Court, there are a myriad of restaurant options to choose from for dinner, be it a low-key pub like the Blackbird, a gastropub like the Pembroke, or my cafe fave, the Troubadour, not to mention a range of Italian, Thai, Indian, Greek and other cultural cuisine.

Oh, all the wonderful ways in London to procrastinate from packing…All right then, all this being said, I’ve gotsta’ go!

London Relocation Loves Anglotopia!

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Raise your hand if you love the UK!!!  [my left and right hands are enthusiastically punching at the sky]

If you actually listened to me and obeyed my command, then Anglotopia is the site for you!  And what a fun and comprehensive one it is.  This site is purely devoted to all-things-Britain and its loyal Anglophiles.  Are you an Anglophile? Let’s refer to Anglotopia’s definition:

“The strict definition of Anglophile is someone who loves England.

However, we use the term in a more far reaching capacity and use it to define anyone who loves England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We also include any country that Britain has touched in its long history and we regularly feature articles on Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and much more.

This website started out as a place for all the people out there that are perfectly happy to spend a whole weekend watching a British Comedy marathon on PBS. It’s for all the people that dream of traveling to Great Britain or have been there and wish to go back. It’s for all the people fascinated by British Culture, British History and above all the British themselves.

If any of those things appeal to you – then you’re an anglophile and you’ve come to the right place!”

Meet the criteria?  What I think is brilliant about this website is that it’s not just for those already living in London.  Perhaps you do live here, or maybe you’re in the process of relocating to London.  Or maybe you are like the many Anglophiles who track this site simply because they fancy England and visit it in their dreams if not in actuality.  Hence, even if residing in London is not a reality for you right now, this is your quick fix of what you enjoy and a means of getting to know the culture better in case you are preparing the big move.

It’s difficult to know where to even begin with what resources you can find on this site.  It’s bloody everything!  From expat life to vacationing to history to tracking the local news as well as television programs.  You can even find a glossary of British slang to supplement my series of posts on Speaking the Queen’s English :)

If I weren’t at the office, I’d be raising a pint of room-temperature, honey-colored lager to Anglotopia for their brilliant efforts at maintaining this site for Anglophiles worldwide; in lieu of that, I’ll just send out an “Oi!” on behalf of Britain’s other biggest fan, London Relocation Ltd.
