When you’re moving to London your first decision is going to be where to live. Do you get an ultra modern London apartment or a cute Victorian London rental home? Which area you live in is also important in terms of amenities, schools, and the transport system. You can do a lot of research before you touch down in London, and be sure to ask your colleagues at your new job to give you advice and recommendations about places to live in London.

South London – Wimbledon

Many people have heard of Wimbledon as it hosts the most famous tennis tournament in the world. The suburb of Wimbledon has a lovely village atmosphere to it, the streets are full of family homes and there are a number of excellent schools and shops in the area. Wimbledon is in South/West London and the you can rent a small London flat here for about £800 per week ranging up to £ 2500 for a terraced family home.

Council Information: Clapham falls under the Council Borough of Merton with annual taxes, ranging from £1000 – £3000.

Transport: Wimbledon tube station is on the District Line of the London Underground and your Transport Zone for ticket prices is in Zone 3. It’s about 30 minutes by tube from Wimbledon to the centre of London and about 15 minutes if you take the train from Wimbledon station to central London, Waterloo Station. There are loads of buses for transport in and around Wimbledon.

Shopping: Sainsbury, Tesco and Marks and Spencer’s all have branches in Wimbledon and Tesco’s offer a delivery service in the area.

Doctors: If you’re looking for a doctor in the Wimbledon area you can use the NHS website, which also has a handy section on symptoms and non-emergency medical care. You can call the NHS Direct hotline on 0845 4647 for any health care questions and advice

Other Amenities: There are a number of restaurants and pubs in the Wimbledon area. Great family food and traditional British fare in this country village right in the city of London. Many expat choose to live in Wimbledon if they have young families and if you’re looking for great schools then Wimbledon is your choice for living in London

Weekend Warrior Saturday: Packing an “Open Me First” Box for Your London Move

Saturday August 28th, 2010

Author:  Colleen

Moving to London and don’t know where to begin packing? As a Weekend Warrior, you can be productive without over-stressing or exhausting yourself. Whereas last Saturday, I focused on a packing tip of the sentimental variety, today is gets down to logistics.

For today’s tip, I must credit relocation specialist Judy Rickatson, who had this to offer on the Families in Global Transition forum on LinkedIn:

“Pack an ‘Open Me First’ carton for the kitchen, containing one mug, plate, bowl, knife, fork & spoon for everyone in the household, plus a kettle/coffee pot and any other essentials for the first day in the new home. Saves opening ALL the kitchen boxes to find what you need.”

I LOVE this tip.  After living in London for two months before our possessions were moved here from the U.S. (long story), my husband and I had been eating with plastic utensils from Marks & Spencer, so would have surely appreciated access to our own set straightaway.  Just an easy yet super helpful suggestion to keep in mind as you prepare to relocate to the UK.

Weekend Warrior Sunday: London Leaders

Sunday August 22nd, 2010

Author:  Colleen

As promised in my previous post, whereas Weekend Warrior Saturdays will entail practical moving tips for your London relocation, Weekend Warrior Sundays will share a tidbit in history on the significant people who have made London what it is today (this is how I’ll run with it for a while, at least :) ).

To start from antiquity, what those who aren’t yet living in London may not realize is that the ancient Romans once settled here.  Indeed, let us go back to when Julius Caesar’s army invades England in 55 BC – the Romans land at Kent and journey north until they hit the Thames River at modern-day Southwark.  There is only a small tribe living in the area at this time, but when the Romans return nearly a century later, there is a larger settlement there utilizing it as a mercantile port.  In 43 AD, the Emporor Claudius invades Britain and establishes its capital city on the north bank of the Thames, naming it Londinium.  The city prospers to a population of 50,000 by the 3rd century, yet by the 5th century, the Roman Empire has fallen.  Londinium is consequently left abandoned to the Saxons.

Just a little something to consider as you plan to relocate to the UK – it isn’t all about Shakespeare and Henry VIII in these here parts.  England has an ancient history that is still present to the eye, with roads that still follow the paths established by the Romans and outcroppings of ruins here and there – in London, you can see remnants of a Roman wall that delineated the city’s boundary immediately outside Tower Hill tube station and scattered between the city centre’s corporate offices!
