As an American you will need much more help when planning short trips.  One popular day trip (or even overnight trip) expats frequently enjoy is walking tours of the English countryside.  Although London is one of the world’s largest cities once you leave the bustling city the countryside of Jane Austen novels greet you.  With rolling hills, lazy fields full of all kinds of farm animals and cozy homesteads dotting the landscape you could not ask for a better place to enjoy a day’s hike.

An American Moving to London – Where to Wander

There are several wonderful parts of England to wander around exploring.  Chiltern, an area northwest of London is one of the most beautiful areas of the country and is quite organized in their mapping services. Visitors to Chiltern can choose between many free maps as well as group outings with field guides.  Often, trips are themed such as fall colors or plant identification.  Unlike in the states an American moving to London is allowed free access to private property when walking making day hikes that more exciting.

Of course common courtesy and common sense is expected if you’re walking on private land.  Visitors should close gates they open and remember that farm animals are not pets.  Cows and bulls have been known to attack strangers so caution should be used.  Farm houses and their inhabitants should be left alone.  Cell phones should be kept on a person at all times and appropriate clothing should be worn, weather dictating.  Out of all the activities an American moving here can experience day hikes through the countryside is perhaps one of the most memorable.

Places to Visit after Moving to London England – Buckingham Palace

Many Americans have one tourist destination in mind after moving to London England – Buckingham Palace.  The home to England’s queen and backdrop to several centuries of British history, the palace epitomizes the British experience to so many American expats.  Now, thanks to a special limited time opening private tours are made available in Buckingham Palace.

The process of moving to London England can be exhausting for families coming from the United States.  After adjusting to the weather and new time zone a break from all the stress related to any move is much due.  This January those moving to London England are in for a fabulous treat when the doors of Buckingham Palace are open for a very select showing of some of England’s greatest treasures.

Built in the early eighteenth century Buckingham Palace (known then as Buckingham House) was the residence of the Duke of Buckingham.  During the nineteenth century it was enlarged and used by King George III as a residence for Queen Charlotte.  It was finally adopted as the official residence of the British monarch in 1837 by Queen Victoria.

Included in the tour is a walk through nineteen staterooms and guests will be able to admire some of the palace’s finest art, up close and personal.  After an approximate two hour tour of the palace visitors are invited to enjoy a glass of champagne on the West Terrace which overlooks the palace gardens (weather permitting).  After the chore of moving to London England a tour such as this is just what the doctor ordered.  For those unable to get tickets to this exclusive tour several other palace tours are ongoing or seasonal throughout the year.

After moving to England making time for oneself can be difficult.  Relocation agents recommend to help ease the transition new Americans to the city should try and explore as much as possible between juggling a new job and family commitments. Moving from New York – Visit the London Art Fair

After moving to London from New York many expats miss the wonderful variety in art.  This January while barred from the outdoors due to cold and rain all fresh expats should make a visit to the London Art Fair.  This world renowned art fair features over one hundred galleries and will make anyone moving from New York feel right at home.

The London Art Fair runs from Tuesday, January 18th to Sunday, January 22nd and is held at the Business Design Centre in the heart of London on Upper Road.  Prices are quite reasonable for the event and children under twelve are free making this the perfect event for families moving from New York.

One of the most exciting aspects of the London Art Fair for art enthusiasts is the Art Projects section which unveils some of the world’s up and coming artists giving the general public a first look at tomorrow’s masters.  Also an integral part of the fair is the many discussions and lectures taking place by some of local top art critics and historians.  Each day there are several lectures and discussions open to the general public and included in the admission price.

It’s estimated that during the month of January, London’s coldest most gloomiest month, the city sees less than two hours of sunshine a day.  This can be very hard for Americans recently moved to the city to get used to.  For those moving from New York and beginning to feel the effects of the dreariness that envelops us during the winter, a trip to the London Art Fair might be just the ticket to combat the winter-time blues.

With the entire family welcome and the price of admission about the same as a dinner out there is really very few excuses one can present as to why they should not go.  Part of the acclimation process after moving from New York is to embrace the city and all it has to offer, drinking in the culture.
